PHILO CAFÉ 2020

We’ll begin the new year with a brand new edition of the Philo Café.
On the first Sunday of each month (except long weekends) from January to May, the CGAC, in collaboration with the Galician Critics Association, will be offering new encounters where you can participate in philosophical discussions while enjoying a cup of coffee while contemplating a work of art.
The Philo Cafés at the CGAC are public conversations open to anyone interested in discussing philosophical concerns and points of view from any discipline or level of knowledge.
The sessions will be directed by professionals from various disciplinary backgrounds. Joining us this year will be Quico Cadaval, playwright; Beatriz Busto Miramontes, anthropologist; Manuela Palacios González, philologist; Antón Lopo, author; and a well-known figure in the world of art, Miguel Ángel Cajigal Vera (known on Twitter as El Barroquista).
Every month, we’ll take a work of art from the CGAC Collection out of the museum’s storage area. The idea is for it to join us and lead us into a discussion.
The selected artwork will serve as a take-off point to spark the conversation. But the conversation will not be focused on art, or not only on art, but rather it will encompass any topic suggested by the piece on many different levels—conceptual, formal or superficial. The conversation may revolve around science, gastronomy, politics, music, philosophy, cinema, aesthetics, current events… anything from the mundane to the sublime, inviting everyone to give his or her opinion and thoughts on the issues that crop up spontaneously.12 JANUARY. QUICO CADAVAL was born in the year 4 a.m. M.M. (before the death of Marilyn Monroe) in the Ría de Arousa, the land where God laid the ring finger of his hand on the seventh day, the day of rest. He grew up in a tavern where he learned about the origin of life and who brought the presents on Kings’ Day far earlier that what pedagogical theories dictate. He frequented places where the old women would pee standing up and swear in any position and he also attended classes taught by a teacher with hair like a lion’s mane who was keen on Baroque literature as well as corporal punishment—a man who shaped his artistic personality. He lied and procrastinated in his university years, and went through periods of excessive consumption of cannabis and distilled beverages, which outraged his influential junkie friends. A friend, who preferred to join a multinational insurance company, got him involved the quagmire of the theater.
This is where his long list of friends must have started, what he treasures most, but, our space is limited. As is time. He ended up writing plays and now travels around the world telling stories for which he need all of the above.
2 FEBRUARY. BEATRIZ BUSTO MIRAMONTES (Santiago de Compostela, 1979) holds a PhD in Social and Cultural Anthropology, a Master’s Degree in Musical Education from the University of Vigo and a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Music and Social and Cultural Anthropology Science from the Autonomous University of Madrid. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled ‘La Galicia proyectada por No-Do. La arquitectura del estereotipo musical a partir del uso del folclore musical 1943-1981,’ for which she obtained the maximum qualification. Her research career is focused on the cultural construction of Galicia and how it is represented in the cinematographic image of the No-Do (the state-controlled News and Documentary Newsreels), based on the use of folklore during Franco’s dictatorship from the theoretical perspectives of ethnomusicology. Part of her research will soon be published by Através Editora.
1 MARCH. MANUELA PALACIOS GONZÁLEZ (A Coruña, 1959) is a professor of English philology at the University of Santiago de Compostela. She has directed five research projects on contemporary Galician and Irish writers and has published and co-published several books on this subject: Pluriversos (2003), Palabras extremas (2008), Writing Bonds (2009), Creation, Publishing and Criticism (2010), To the Winds Our Sails (2010) Forked Tongues (2012), Six Galician Poets (2016) Migrant Shores (2017) and Young Galician Poets (2019). Other publications include translations of European and Arabic poetry and narrative works, guides on the pictorial images in the works of Virginia Woolf, as well as on Shakespeare’s Richard III and articles on ecocriticism.
5 APRIL. ANTÓN LOPO (Monforte de Lemos, 1961) is a renowned poet and novelist and has been awarded the Spanish National Critics Prize. He is also a playwright and a performer of radical physicality (he studied under Marina Abramovic), and has had a long career in journalism. He is the author of a series of biographies that have renewed the genre in Galicia. He also directs the publishing companies, Chan da Pólvora Editora, A Biblioteca de Mesopotamia, in the Ribeira Sacra, and Santiago’s poetry festival, Alguén que Respira. His works of poetry include Pronomes (1998), Fálame (2004) and Dentro (2005). His most recent volume of poetry, Corpo (2018), has become a work of reference. As a writer he has published cult works such as Ganga (2000) and Obediencia (2010). Extraordinario (2018), his most recent work, has become the season’s narrative sensation. Some of his most important performance works include O outro estremo do paraíso (1998) and Lob*s (1999), in collaboration with Ana Romaní, Prestidixitador (2000), Acciónd (2004), Dentro (2005) and Lampíricos (2013-2015).
10 MAY. MIGUEL ÁNGEL CAJIGAL VERA (A Coruña, 1981) is a teacher, researcher and cultural disseminator. He holds a Degree in Art History and a Diploma for Advanced Studies in Art and Music History from the University of Santiago de Compostela. He belongs to the Education Services of the City of Culture of Galicia. He directs the Master’s in Museum and Cultural Spaces Education of the Miguel de Cervantes University (Valladolid). He is a member of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). He has collaborated with Colgate University, the Vassar College – Wesleyan University Consortium, The Council for Galician Culture, the University of Málaga, The Spanish Committee of Art History and the Museum of Almería, among many other institutions. As El Barroquista, he keeps an active profile disseminating art and culture on the Internet and social media and collaborates on the radio program Galicia por diante of Radio Galega.
