In this workshop we will approach a reading of the city as a complex organism, using the concept of aesthetic experience as a primary tool. By this we mean everything that the different senses capture from a city and that constitutes the common heritage of citizenship (everyone sees the same façades, hears the same noises, gets wet by the rain on the same day). We will dive into the aesthetic experience of the city also thanks to the different stories that inhabit it: social, political, urban, local or global. We will take special care to reflect on how the aesthetic experiences of citizens differ: for example, we do not see certain details on buildings because they do not seem significant to us.

We will also bear in mind that a city is a huge device producing an aesthetic experience and, in this sense, no approach is neutral, but rather forms an immediate part of urban life itself.

In order to give a specific sense to all these questions, in this workshop we will focus on the San Pedro neighbourhood of Compostela, adjacent to the CGAC.

During the three 3-day face-to-face sessions that will take place throughout 2023, we will take the experiences of the artist Claudio Zulian in different cities as a starting point, reading and listening to the neighbourhood and explore possible paths of both artistic and academic or socio-political cultural production. In order to follow-up the work correctly, the activity will be complemented with three additional online sessions.

This new edition is a continuation of the workshop given by Claudio Zulian in November 2022. Throughout 2023, we propose, on the one hand, to deepen the theoretical issues that were addressed then and, on the other hand, to extend the practical work of exploring the San Pedro neighbourhood.
