Manthia Diawara (Bamako, Mali, 1953) is a filmmaker and cultural theorist.Trained in Guinea-Conakry and Paris, he travelled to the United States where he worked as a teacher as well as extensively making films and writing essays.
Much of his research focuses on the study of the culture of the African diaspora.

Rouch in Reverse, 1995
Original Version
Through an analysis of the life and work of filmmaker and ethnographer Jean Rouch, this film launches the debate on the state of contemporary Franco-African society from an African perspective.It entails, due to its technical characteristics, a new twist to the reflection on Africa from a cinema standpoint.
Diawara analyses Rouch's films and his overall outlook on life with passion and honesty.Rouch in Reverse is a must for anyone interested in postcolonial studies. Diawara addresses Rouch with the same intrigue the latter explored the small African community subject of his famous documentary Les Mâitres fous (1955).

Maison Tropicale, 2008

The documentary by Manthia Diawara explores the history of the maisons tropicales—tropical colonial houses—that were built in West Africa during the last stage of French colonisation.In it he addresses various issues on contemporary art, politics and enigmas in postcolonial Africa.
Maison Tropicale presents a little known story through three houses designed by the famous French designer and engineer Jean Prouvé during the years after the Second World War.Prouvé's work was financed by the French colonial government, which in 1951 conceived these prototype houses as a means of addressing the housing shortage in the French colonies of West Africa.
Manthia Diawara embarks on a journey to delve into the dark historical trajectory of the typology of the maison tropicale alongside the Portuguese artist Ângela Ferreira.The results of this study were presented in 2007 in the Portuguese pavilion of the Venice Biennale, with an installation also titled Maison Tropicale, whose scale model can be seen from 21 June to 29 September at the exhibition Little by Little in the CGAC.
