CGAC AND OTHER LANDMARKS OF SANTIAGO’S ARCHITECTURE. Contemporary Architecture Route
Contemporary architecture and town planning are the city of Compostela’s great unknowns. This route comprises a sample of building works carried out in the last fifty years that has continually defined and distinguished the city’s northern area. We will talk about the relationship between architecture and landscape, the dialogue between tradition and modernity, stone and the new architectural languages…
Starting with the exterior of the CGAC, we will emphasise the importance of this, Alvaro Siza Vieira’s first work in Santiago de Compostela. We will continue our walk, stopping at other landmarks of Santiago’s contemporary architecture: the ensemble of Avenida Xoán XXIII; Santiago’s Public Library, Ánxel Casal, by Andrés Perea; The President of the Xunta de Galicia’s residence, by Manuel Gallego Jorreto; the Simeón estate, also known as Vista Alegre park, with interventions by César Portela, Arata Isozaki and Antón García Abril; and the Auditorium of Galicia, by Julio Cano Lasso.
We end our walk by returning to Siza’s architecture, in Santiago de Compostela’s Faculty of Communication Sciences.
The aim of this activity is to encourage all those who participate to discover the more recent architectures and urban spaces while walking around the city.

CARMEN REY (Santiago de Compostela, A Coruña, 1970), Architecture graduate, specialising in Structures, from the University of A Coruña. She has worked as a freelancer in the profession since 2000.
She is a member of the Delegation of Santiago of the Official Professional Association of Architects of Galicia, and since 2016 has represented this institution as a member (both full and alternate) of the Technical Committee and the Advisory Committee of Historical Heritage of the Special Plan for the Historical City of Santiago (PE-1) of Santiago City Council. She is also a member of Architects without Borders of Galicia and, since March 2019 has been an individual member of the Spanish National Committee of Icomos.
