ON THE ROAD: ROAD, TRAIL AND HORIZON FILMS. Film Course
This course proposes an exploration of different filmic landscapes through the displacement of bodies and the journey, both physical and symbolic (if such a distinction can be made). From the heyday of classicism in the nineteen-thirties to the present day, through almost a hundred years of film history and through films from different genres and countries, we will search for the horizon along roads and highways, as so many nomads have done before. It is, of course, the hero's or heroine's journey that has fuelled the tales of humanity since our ancestors first sat around a campfire to tell a story. It is the impulse to leave in search of a ‘there’—a different geography, a different time—in which to refound the ‘here.’ Because, as Dorothy says, ‘if we walk far enough... we shall sometime come to someplace.’ Or maybe not, the wonderful world of Oz may not be waiting for us beyond the rainbow, but there will always be a story along the way.
