WHAT ARE YOU PAINTING IN THIS FIESTA? A Drawing and Watercolour Workshop for Fiesta Fans

This workshop, in collaboration with the San Pedro neighbourhood, invites you to visit their fiestas through a sketched tour. An exploration of the neighbourhood guided by the relationship between observing and sketching.

We’ll start the session with a theoretical class with image projection and we’ll address fast-drawing techniques. We’ll then go outside to draw within a framing proposal and we’ll settle in a spot that makes us part of the fiestas: the terrace of a bar, a street bench, a doorway, on the ground... If it’s raining, an alternative location with views of the street will be planned.

We’ll walk around and record streets, buildings and people through quick colour sketching. We’ll use watercolour, markers and brushes on sketch pads.

We’ll observe from different perspectives how the street changes its state and mood throughout the morning and how it is dressed for the fiesta. We’ll pay special attention to the vibrant or collected emotions given off by the atmosphere. This will be the work material for our painting.

We’ll propose different and distorted optics for each participant to make their own street drawing—a unique perspective, a frame, glasses with a coloured filter, kaleidoscopic glasses, blurred lenses, etc.

We know that when we draw, we’ll see more. In approaching this exercise, the gaze is broadened and focused. We sharpen our perception, we become aware of the details and we get closer to the artist within us. The experience will offer us new faces and different views and ways of interpreting these popular fiestas.

MARÍA MEIJIDE (Santiago de Compostela, 1978) is a fine arts graduate specialising in painting from the University of Seville. She studied a master’s degree in painting at the fine arts faculty at the University of Lisbon, with her final dissertation titled Intimidades próprias e alheias. Sobre a pintura de cenas de interior. She studied a master’s degree in graphic art at the Fundación CIEC in the modules of screen printing, lithography, intaglio and woodcut.

She’s an accomplished visual artist on the art scene in Galicia, specialising in large format figurative painting and travelogues. Her work is vivacious, colourist and biographical, with an extensive background in national and international exhibition projects.

She has published two wide-ranging travelogues and an emotional cartography of Compostela. Her latest publication is a piece in notebook format, Autobiografía cuantificada ou que difícil é ser maría meijide, co-published by Tulipa Editorial.

She was recently awarded the Jesús Nuñez International Award of Graphic Art in its 16th edition.
