THE INTERPRETED CITY

01 October 2010 - 28 November 2010
Curator:
Pablo Fanego
Artists:
Rubén Santiago

It comprises two specific interventions to be held in different but connected areas: the town’s water canalisation system and the basement and surrounding area to the museum.

Rubén Santiago conceives each one of his artistic proposals as the recreation of situations of distress surrounding several themes or collective concerns.

In this particular occasion, the underground hydraulic engineering elements that ramify vertically into our homes will be used as the canvas of an innocuous action with great symbolic repercussion. On the other hand, in his specific work for CGAC, the artist will explore the nature of the museum as a medium capable of articulating subjectivities and immaterial resources that portray the community of users that define it. The posed intervention will concentrate on the museum’s space, both in a physical perspective—determined by geography, architecture and urbanism—as well as a conceptual one, envisioning the museum as a key institution in recognising present and modelling future through experience and memory.

The starting point of his proposal is the materiality itself of the building designed by Álvaro Siza and the history surrounding it: the location of the museum upon a terrain rich with spring water, previously occupied by the vegetable patch of the Bonaval monastery; a highly defining characteristic in Siza’s architecture. In fact, in order to prevent permanent leakage of underground water into the construction it was necessary to install a pumping mechanism to retain and derive water into the municipal sewage system. Hence it can be said that CGAC is not only upon a constant flow of water that not only supplies the surrounding park with water but also, as it filters into the museum with persistence, as popular folklore identifies the mighty action of the soft water upon the hard stone, it is through this condition of stone museum as a structure confronting erosion and constant change of the passing of time that Rubén Santiago elaborates his poetic proposal.
