Arquitectura para espazos culturais. Ruta de arquitectura

ARCHITECTURE FOR CULTURAL SPACES. Architecture Route

22 February 2025 - 15 November 2025
From 11.00 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
Coordination:
Virginia Villar
Directorate:
Carmen Rey

Once again, we will walk through the streets of Santiago de Compostela; on this occasion, to talk about architecture as a container for cultural spaces. To do this, we will stop at some of these places where, beyond simply creating spaces intended to provide a service, architecture can and should be an inspiring element that accompanies and enhances the experience of the visit.

We will start with the CGAC, a centre that was conceived from the outset for the purpose it fulfils today, and we will discuss the importance of this work by Álvaro Siza Vieira as a container and a vessel for art.  We will continue the visit at the Museo das Peregrinacións e de Santiago, designed by Manuel Gallego Jorreto in the building of the former Bank of Spain, originally designed by the architect Romualdo de Madariaga in the mid-20th century. We will end our walk at the Eugenio Granell Foundation, based in the former Pazo de Bendaña, built in the 17th century. We will discover some of the hidden corners of these buildings that illustrate different examples of how to intervene in an area declared a World Heritage Site and how to enhance pre-existing architecture, which is transformed and adapted to the programme of current cultural activities within the city’s medieval fabric.

This new architectural route aims to encourage people to go on walks while discovering architecture and urban spaces in constant transformation.
