CONTEMPORARY MUSIC SESSIONS 2018

06 June 2018 - 29 June 2018

Fans of cult and avant-garde music are invited to enjoy a programme filled with concerts, lectures and shows at different places in the city starting Wednesday June 6 until Friday June 29. Under the title Music, emotion and memory, this year’s events celebrate the work of Enrique Xerardo Macías (1958-1995) and the mark he made. This composer from Vigo introduced Galician music to other sounds and was one of the founders of this event in 1987. On the 60th anniversary of the birth of Macías, the 2018 Contemporary Music Sessions pay tribute to the work of this unique and dynamic composer who is considered to be one of the most talented of his generation. Despite the fact that he died at the age of 40, he has served as a model for emerging figures of Galician composition to this day.

The programme also commemorates other figures and events of great importance on both the international scene and in Galicia, such as the 100th anniversary of the death of Claude Debussy (1862-1918), the 170th anniversary of Santiago’s Municipal Band and the 70th anniversary of the Municipal band of A Coruña, as well as the exhibition in Galicia of the Pergamiño Vindel scrolls, with music by Martin Codax. At the same time the event will highlight the importance of the contribution of women to music, in order to harmonise and integrate the presence of women into all aspects of society.
