LA TRAVIATA. Live Broadcast of the Opera by Giuseppe Verdi
The CGAC has this year been invited once again to participate in the Teatro Real of Madrid’s Opera Week. On this occasion, we are pleased to present a live broadcast of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, an intense, romantic and tragic opera and a huge favourite of audiences worldwide.
Based on the famous novel by Alexandre Dumas, The Lady of the Camellias, the opera recounts the passionate love affair between the courtesan Violetta Valéry and the young nobleman Afredo Germont in 19th-century Paris. This emblematic opera contains powerful and emotional music that goes straight to our hearts, with unforgettable moments for our popular culture that include the arias ‘Sempre libera’ and ‘Addio del passato,’ or the famous brindisi ‘Libiamo ne' lieti calici’.
The production chosen for these broadcasts, designed and directed by Willy Decker, introduces us to the protagonist at the centre of an unavoidable destiny, surrounded by a hypocritical and oppressive bourgeois society, powerless against the inexorable passage of time. A trio of great voices led by Adela Zaharia (Violetta Valéry), Xabier Anduaga (Alfredo Germont) and Artur Rucinski (Giorgio Germont) will bring this passionate story to life, together with the Teatro Real’s Resident Chorus and Orchestra and under the musical direction of Henrik Nánási.
