NEXT STOOOOOP!... IRAN. Workshops for Familes
Project implementation: Sara Donoso
We’re back for another year with our workshops for families! A project in which aunts, nephews, nieces, grandparents, granddaughters, parents, siblings... can be introduced to the world of contemporary art by exploring each stage of the creative process through the work of different artists.
This year, we continue our journey through the Asian continent with a stop in Iran, a country with a broad and rich cultural heritage that has left a deep impression on its artists. We’ll discover its customs, language and landscapes. We’ll design tattoos, create our own collection of stories and construct scenarios based on the work of a series of artists who reinterpret their culture with a contemporary focus.
PROGRAMME
NOTHING IS ART. PARVIZ TANAVOLI
18 JANUARY. For families with children from 4 to 6 years old
19 JANUARY. For families with children from 7 to 9 years old
Registration period: 9-16 January
He’s one of Iran's most important artists. One of his most outstanding projects are the Heeches: three-dimensional sculptures that represent the word “nothing” in Persian. Parviz Tanavoli draws on the history of his country and its traditions to create. His work seeks to bridge the gap between the ancient and the modern by assembling handicrafts and everyday objects that he transforms into works of art. In his paintings and sculptures, we find creatures or animals from different sources of inspiration: Persian love stories, religion or popular icons such as the cage, the lion, the padlock and the bird.
From this artist’s work we’ll create pieces using old objects and recycled materials, we’ll invent mythological animals, play with the body and design our own jewellery line.
BODIES THAT SPEAK. SHIRIN NESHAT
15 FEBRUARY. For families with children from 4 to 6 years old
16 FEBRUARY. For families with children from 7 to 9 years old
Registration period: 6-13 February
Shirin Neshat is one of the most representative female Iranian contemporary artists on an international level. She uses photography and the audiovisual medium to talk about women’s status in Islamic society. In her best-known works, she shows parts of her body, such as her face and hands, on which she writes texts in Persian calligraphy that vindicate the struggle for freedom and equality.
Shirin Neshat's work will allow us to explore our body as a canvas on which to paint and from which to express our emotions and desires. We’ll be able to create our own ephemeral tattoos.
CULTURED AND HIDDEN! PARASTOU FOROUHAR
22 MARCH. For families with children from 4 to 6 years old
23 MARCH. For families with children from 7 to 9 years old
Registration period: 13-20 March
Parastou Forouhar's work transforms patterns and ornaments into more than decoration: they are attractive drawings hiding deep and difficult stories. Her work invites us to look beyond what we see with the naked eye, to discover hidden messages between lines and figures.
Starting with some of the best-known symbols of Iranian culture, we’ll play with what is seen and not seen, we’ll use decorative shapes to modify space and create small scenarios in the workshop space.
A WORLD IN MOVEMENT. SAMIRA HODAEI
12 APRIL. For families with children from 4 to 6 years old
13 APRIL. For families with children from 7 to 9 years old
Registration period: 3-10 April
Samira Hodaei talks about the relationships between different cultures and politics worldwide. She also explores issues of concern in her country, Iran, such as identity, religion and the role of the oil industry. Her work helps us to understand how we relate to each other on a personal level and how we relate to our environment, emphasising the importance of highlighting work that often goes unnoticed.
During this workshop we’ll use fabric and thread to create by transforming familiar images into mosaics that represent an ever-changing world. We’ll also explore the fundamental role of women in ancient trades, creating paintings and installations that remind us of the importance of their contribution to history and culture.
STORIES AND REFLECTIONS. SHIRIN ABEDINIRAD
17 MAY. For families with children from 4 to 6 years old
18 MAY. For families with children from 7 to 9 years old
Registration period: 8-15 May
Shirin Abedinirad is an artist who aims to explore the connection between people and nature. To do so, she creates artwork in different formats such as video, performance or installation, using mirrors as one of her favourite materials.
Through her work we’ll learn about the shapes and the use of temples in Persian culture and we’ll connect ancient history with today's world.
We’ll experiment with light and colour, reflect on the changes in the landscape and draw inspiration from classic tales to transport us to magical worlds.
