PAULINE OLIVEROS. Series of Screenings
This set of five recordings and films brings together a series of collaborations with the writer IONE, as well as mezzosoprano and artist Loré Lixenberg and experimental composer Frédéric Acquaviva.
Pauline Oliveros collaborates on many occasions with IONE; three of her most noteworthy collaborations include Dreams of the Jungfrau (1991), the dance-opera Io and Her and the Trouble with Him (2001) and Njinga. The Queen King (1991), a work written by IONE with an original composition by Pauline Oliveros. This was partly the result of a commission and was developed during a two-week stay spent by the artist at the Yellow Springs Institute. It arose from some research carried out by IONE on the regent of Angola, Nzinga Mbandi. IONE began to collaborate with Pauline Oliveros to create this play in 1987. Mixing contemporary and traditional styles, it narrates the story of the 17th-century African regent.
Io and Her and the Trouble with Him is choreographed by Joanna Haigood and is a “multimedia piece that transports the public to a primeval time”. The last collaboration with IONE in this series is Dreams of the Jungfrau, an experimental video lasting 20 minutes and filmed in Switzerland, which refers to Last Year in Marienbad by Alain Resnais.
The two other works that complete this series are two video portraits of Pauline Oliveros and IONE filmed by Acquaviva and Lixenberg. In Singterview, made in 2016 by Loré Lixenberg, the singer uses operatic techniques to execute this unusual interview.
