QUANTUM PHYSICS APPLIED TO DANCE. Quantum Dance Workshop
As part of the programme of activities jointly organised by IGFAE, CESGA, and the CGAC to celebrate Science Week, this workshop proposes an encounter between science and art. Participants will explore how the principles of quantum physics—superposition, uncertainty, entanglement, and observation—can inspire new forms of creation and movement in contemporary dance.
Through body exercises, guided improvisations, and theoretical reflections, participants will experiment with the relationship between body, energy, and perception. The workshop will explore how the presence of the observer can alter the scenic reality, how multiple choreographic possibilities can coexist, and how movement itself can become a metaphor for quantum behaviour.
The workshop invites artists, dancers, and anyone curious about dance and quantum physics to inhabit the space between the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the potential, generating a practice that combines scientific thought, bodily intuition, and stage experimentation.
PAULA QUINTAS (Ourense, 1983) is a dancer, circus artist, choreographer, teacher, and cultural manager. She holds a Master’s degree in Performing Arts from the Rey Juan Carlos University and is currently researching the boundaries and intersections of body arts within the PhD programme Creation and Research in Contemporary Art at the University of Vigo. Her company, Paula Quintas-Cía, has a ten-year trajectory producing shows across various formats and disciplines. Hybridising dance and circus is her distinctive hallmark. With work defined by the dialogue between body and movement, she creates a strong visual and experiential component through contemporary codes. Among her most recent performances are Aurora boreal (2025) and Multiperspectivas (2021–2024).
HÉCTOR ÁLVAREZ POL (Ribas de Sil, Lugo, 1972) is a professor in the Department of Particle Physics at the University of Santiago de Compostela and a researcher at IGFAE. He also moves his body to the rhythm of tango. He will introduce participants to the basic elements and fundamental interactions of physics as central tools in the conversation with contemporary dance.
TARGET AUDIENCE
The workshop is aimed at anyone interested in the body as an expressive tool and in curiosities related to quantum physics.
