LA RIBOT. USER GUIDE

18 September 2020 - 14 February 2021
Lobby, Project Space and auditorium
Curator:
Iñaki Martínez Antelo

Notification: For reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the artist La Ribot has had to postpone her performance Pièce distinguée no. 45, initially planned for 18 September 2020 at 7 p.m. in the CGAC foyer, until further notice.

User Guide is an exhibition by La Ribot (Madrid, 1962) documenting a journey through her work over the last twenty years. The works integrating the exhibition are, like all her work, closely connected to the relationship between dance and visual arts. For an artist who moves between both worlds, between theatres, auditoriums, exhibition halls, museums and even art fairs, many of her creations have been conceived in these opportunities she has to approach different works in which one of the main constraints is temporality. This is a matter that will be addressed in this CGAC project in which we can watch Pièce distinguée nº 45(Distinguished Pieces) live, in addition to some of her works in video, installation and photographic format.

Since the early nineties, she has been working on the construction of a different kind of work, developing Piezas distinguidas (Distinguished Pieces): short films that have been compiled into series/performances since 1993 and which play with the limits between artistic disciplines. Some of these works, posing questions about the ephemeral, the immaterial, and the art market have even been purchased by collectors.

The duration of her choreographies range between barely thirty seconds and the six hours of Laughing Hole, a performance that, after its premiere at Art Basel in 2006, was shown in Galicia in the MARCO of Vigo, and continues to be performed all over the world, like many more of her creations.

La Ribot’s work is structured round a system that enables her to investigate, expand and question the spatial and temporal limits of dance and tear down the frontiers between the audience and the artist, also acknowledging the roles of the technicians and the extras.

The exhibition by La Ribot is part of the first edition of Plataforma, Festival de Artes Performativas (Performing Arts Festival), a project developed by Performa S. Coop. Galega.
