If something can be said to be the defining trait of the work of Waltercio Caldas (Rio de Janeiro, 1946) that is a particular conception of space and a highly personal treatment of its specificity. It is therefore quite reasonable and natural that a part of his production should take the form of sculpture in public spaces or, as the artist likes to put it, 'open-air sculpture. Alongside his peculiar way of treating space, these two words, 'open' and 'air, are the mainstays of the work he has been generating since the seventies.
Starting from these three basic elements, this publication is an approach to his production, conceived to function in an open, public space directly accessible in different contexts, be they urban situations such as a square in Rio de Janeiro, be they landscape spaces such as a jord in Norway.
