Raniero Fernández (Vigo, 1909–1999) produced a compelling body of photographic work during the 1950s and 1960s that, over time, has come to acquire significant recognition. His activity as a photographer was closely linked to his role as president of the Agrupación Fotográfica Gallega during its most active period.
Far removed from the late pictorialist aesthetic that characterized amateur photography at the time, many of his images recall the work of figures such as Cartier-Bresson and Doisneau—most notably the extensive series he produced at the port of Vigo.
It is also worth highlighting his projects devoted to the systematic photographic documentation of hórreos (traditional Galician granaries) and stone crosses (cruceiros) throughout Galicia. All of this underscores the relevance of revisiting Raniero’s work from a contemporary perspective, while situating it firmly within its historical context. To this end, the exhibition will also include works by other photographers such as Ferrol, Losada, Rueda, Schmidt de las Heras, Terré, Veiga Roel, and Zamora.
