POST-PHOTOGRAPHY: FROM PIXEL TO ALGORITHM HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY COURSE

In this course, we will explore post-photography as an expanded field of practices, discourses and critical approaches to the production, circulation and consumption of images in the digital age. Drawing on Joan Fontcuberta’s ideas and engaging in dialogue with other theorists and artists, we will examine how the banal, the amateur, the familiar and the utterly ordinary become conscious forms of aesthetic and political resistance. We will consider how post-photography is understood not as a chronological ‘after’, but as a cultural mutation of the image, in which authorship becomes blurred, the archive is reappropriated, truth is called into question and visual experience becomes mass-scale, automated and, paradoxically, deeply intimate.

26 NOVEMBER. Images against images. Artistic strategies for using the visual ecosystem itself as a critical tool

3 DECEMBER. The fury of images. What does it mean to create in a culture of infinite images?

XAIME FANDIÑO (Vigo, 1952) works with photography, archive material, found footage and editorial processes, exploring how images are produced, selected, organised and circulated. His practice sits at the intersection of commercial photography, editing and artistic research, gradually shifting from image production towards an investigation of the devices, structures and contexts that determine how those images come into being and are interpreted.

His work focuses on the changing conditions of photographic practice and the systems through which images are created, stored, distributed and acquire meaning. Through processes of editing, appropriation and recontextualisation, he explores photography beyond the act of capturing an image, by examining devices, archives, platforms and technological systems that play an increasingly significant role in contemporary image production.

The course is open to anyone with an interest in the history of photography and contemporary culture.
